“Compared with all the other hues, yellow and yellow-red are formed differently in the visual system and therefore have perceptual qualities that make them different. For example, human beings perceive yellow as a unique hue, when in fact their visual system creates the perception of yellow by combining the simultaneous stimulation from red and green light.”
Long (2011) states that "the cultural meanings associated with yellow and yellow-red (orange) are varied. Internationally, yellow-red (orange) has been used to symbolize political movements and change. It is also associated with Hinduism. Swamis are said to wear yellow-red robes because the color symbolizes the burning of the ego"(p. 30). Yellow-red is often associated with autumn in the West, when leaves of many tress turn from green into beautiful variations of the color in October and November. Yellow-red is also associated with the holiday Halloween also occurring in October when "pumpkins are harvested and widely sold, and the evening moon has an orange cast, hence the hue has strong associations with seasonal change. Because Halloween has become an internationally celebrated holiday, this association with yellow-red has spread“ (Long, 2011, p. 30). |
