"White is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity. It is considered to be the color of perfection"(Color Meaning, n.d.). In many cultures and religions, white symbolizes heaven. God is usually depicted wearing white robes, as in Jesus after his resurrection, and white robes and garments are commonly seen in Christian and Muslim religious ceremonies(Long, 2011, p.37).
Long explains that "In Japan, white is associated with inexperience, as seen in the white belt of judo; however in almost all Asian countries, white is the color of mourning and death. In both the West and Japan, white is the traditional color for wedding dresses, but the symbolism differs. White also represents peace, as seen in the flag of the Olympic games and in the flag of surrender"(Long, 2011, p.37). |
